About

Brief history

Baptist Nursery School Port Harcourt, as it was called then was the vision of the first six Baptist Churches in Port Harcourt. They are: First Baptist Church 93 Aggrey Road, Faith Baptist Church Old G.R.A, Victory Baptist Church Rumuomasi, Calvary Baptist Church Borokiri, Central Baptist church Diobu and Emmanuel Baptist Church Diobu.

The purpose of the school was to evangelize children and the Motto is “Train up a child in the way he should go”. (Prov. 22:6). Rivers State Ministry of Education approved the school in 1978. Miss Virginia Dale Moore, the Baptist Missionary in Port Harcourt City ably coordinated the establishment of the school in the premises of Faith Baptist Church, Old G. R. A. Port Harcourt.

Dns. M.D. George, a seasoned educationist and Christian mother, was the pioneer Head- mistress of Baptist Nursery School which started on 2nd October 1978 with 96 Pupils. The growth was rapid, as the school pursued its goal of evangelism effectively by holding appropriate devotional sessions and moral instructions. The staff were devoted Christians who imparted their faith and belief through relevant instruction to the pupils and meaningful interaction with parents and guardians. Among the staff were American Missionaries and Youth Corpers. In 1982, the population of the school was 400 pupils and 20 staff. The school had a Functional Parent Teachers Association (PTA) that helped the school by funding projects and making useful suggestions for the growth of the school.

Mrs. Edna P. Sangoju, another seasoned educationist and Christian woman, became the Headmistress of the school on 1st January 1987. She continued the good work, but the circumstances changed with existential challenges to the school. The fortunes and good will of the school started to dwindle when the owner churches, one after another, started their own Nursery and Primary Schools and were no more focused, thus their interest slacked on Baptist Nursery School. Faith Baptist Church asked the school to vacate her premises by 31st December 1988. The classrooms previously used by the school were reduced in number, leading to a reduction in pupils’ intake. The main problem has been that of permanent spacious site. These crises lasted for more than a decade and the school suffered. At a stage, it appeared that the school would fold up.

The Headmistress did her best to keep the school alive. The Executive Committee of the school, working with the owner churches and W. A. Amakiri Association, appealed to the Rivers Baptist Conference on 4th April 1999 to take over the school.

On the 7th of April 2000 Rev O. C. Frank, Chairman of the school, handed over the school to Rev. W. O. Asita of the Rivers Baptist Conference. The school was moved to the Conference Office premises with a total number of 64 pupils. In November the same year, the Ministry of Education Inspected the school while Mrs. Edna P. Sangoju withdrew her services of 14 years in September 2002. Mrs. Pakrima Alafaa Headed the school for about two years (2003-2004) and Miss Christa N. Osai, a teacher in the school took over the leadership from 2004- 2006. Ministry of Education Inspected the school again in 2005 and recorded a total of 54 pupils. There was the commencement of building 5 classrooms.

Miss Maria Amadi headed the school, from 2007-2018 with modest growth of the school in academics and infrastructural development. She left due to ill health.

Mrs. Blessing Ozoemena is the current Headmistress.

To the glory of God, Baptist Nursery and Primary School is growing despite the challenges of the past. Some of the little children who passed through the school are now university graduates and post graduates in different professions, which is a testimony to the quality of Education the school provided. By and large, the society has been benefiting from the establishment of Baptist Nursery and Primary School.
